Keep Kids In School + Vocational Training
Helping Youth In A Time Of Crisis
Due to land loss and repeated droughts, the Maasai of Rombo, Kenya, have been plunged into poverty. This has forced thousands of youth to drop out of secondary school as their parents can no longer afford their fees. However, the Keep Kids in School+1 Program, a successful initiative established by the community-based organization Pillar of Maasai Development in partnership with the United States-based NGO, the ADEA Foundation, is making a significant impact. Students are returning to class and successfully graduating from secondary school. They are then enrolled in our one-year vocational program to gain practical experience in culinary arts and hospitality before being placed in internships at local safari lodges.
Studies show—and the evidence is all around—that kids who stay in school do better in life. With no cattle to care for (they all died in the droughts) and no jobs, they sit at home. Such girls and boys are likely to marry earlier; boys are forced to take dangerous, low-skilled jobs, and both have a higher risk of substance abuse.
Our extra year of vocational training, given by Kenyan and international teachers, improves their English and gives them practical skills to prepare them for jobs so that they can ultimately support their families.
